The Gambian Public Health Initiative

provides free preventive care and promotes awareness of reproductive health and chronic disease to communities in the Gambia.

Our Services

  • Maternal mortality and infant mortality in the country rank among the highest in the world, reflecting a lack of access to prenatal, postnatal, and infant healthcare. Gambians also have one of the highest fertility rates in the world with an 3.79 children born per woman as of 2022; an estimated 17% of women aged 15-49 use contraception. More than 50% of the population is of child bearing age. GPHI will offer contraception, prenatal, and postnatal services to communities across the country. Over time, we plan to add Pap smears to our services.

  • The Gambia has the 25th highest adult prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the country; more than 26,000 people in the country are currently living with HIV/AIDS. Residents of the country also have a very high risk of contracting major infectious diseases including bacterial and protozoal diarrhea, hepatitis A, and schistosomiasis. GPHI will initially offer rapid HIV testing to our communities, with plans to offer treatments for other infectious diseases over time, including rehydration kits.

  • The life expectancy at birth in the Gambia is 67.6 years. The country has a double burden of disease with high rates of both infectious and non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes. The Gambia has a 0.1 physicians and 1 hospital bed per every 1000 people Screening and education around primary healthcare is essential to improving the overall healthcare outcomes in the nation. GPHI will offer health education sessions, blood pressure screening and blood sugar screenings in the country, with plans in the future to include treatment of primary care conditions.

GPHI uses a mobile clinic model to improve access to healthcare services throughout the Gambia.
